Media Blitz

Con season is right around the corner yall! I'm pretty boosted about getting back into con mode and getting out around the country being a part of the comics community. My covention list for 2014 is up on left side of the blog so if u are gonna be at any of these come by and hang out for a bit.

I've been doing a bunch of interviews lately to Promote Loki: Ragnarok and Roll for Boom! and Extreme Champion Tournament which is being produced by the awesome Shaun Paulete. I wanted to share the interview Peng, Eric Esquivel and I did on the Hangout and a brand new interview with Beaucouppop (find the interview here). Plus just cuz I know you really come here for the art some new fun sketches and unposted art from FVZ!

WOW. Where do I start? So right before leaving for SDCC I found out that I was nominated for a HARVEY AWARD! IT's crazy. Fanboys Vs Zombies was my first big comic project and I've only been working on it for about a year and a half... to be nominated for a Harvey at this point is a huge deal for me. The category is Most Promising New Talent. I can hardly believe that I made the ballot. It's humbling and encouraging to know that people out there are really enjoying my work. The Harvey Awards Dinner is held at the Baltimore Comic Con every year so this year will be extra special for me. It's just a few months away and I don't even know if I can survive all the anticipation!

FVZ is still moving along. The last arc was a pretty big deal. It was probably the most challenging arc to draw because con season has been in full swing. There have been so many weeks of traveling that it has made working on the book pretty tough. Every time I got out of town for a con it means I only have a 2 day work week. Even still I've managed to put out work that I'm proud of, but I'm really looking forward to finishing issue 18 with a full month to work on it.

So for this post I really want to showcase more FVZ  in honor of my nomination. I have been doing a terrible job of post FVZ stuff here so I figure these cover images and process pieces will work out pretty nicely. I'm especially excited about issue 18 with the Walking Dead Homage cover. I'll post photos from SDCC next post.

Enjoy!

I'm Still Here

There's a ton of stuff going on right now so I really haven't had a second to keep this place updated. I missed last weeks post all together! Any how I promise I'll write recap of C2E2 and Free Comic Book Day (they got crazy!) early next week before we head out to Detroit for Motor City Comic con.

Speaking of Motor City here is a look at the exclusive cover I did for the show. I'll be signing at the con with my studio mates Peng and Flash. It's gonna be off the hook!

Behind the Fanboy

It's been a little while since I posted any Fanboys Vs Zombies art and I thought I should really fix that. A lot has happened to the wrecking crew n the last few issues and I gotta get you all up to speed. I'm really enjoying working with Shane Houghton on the book. He really has a great sense of story and comedy. Hopefully you guys think so too.

I'll be at a bunch of cons this year so if you bump into me at a show I'll probably have some original art with me and I'm always happy show the pages. So come on out and say hi!

Back from Emerald City

Batman zombie sketch for my homeboy Jose

Wow. Emerald City was amazing.  Peng and I had a great time in Seattle with the Boom! Studios crew. We had the chance to see some old friends and make some new ones too.  I sketched a ton of FVZ sketch variant covers and even did a couple of  commission pieces. Peng was totally swamped at Kaboom! doing the Adventure time sketch covers. I just want to thank everyone who came out to hang with us for a bit. Seattle is a great town and you guys made us feel right at home. I can't wait till next year.

Now that we are back we have tons of work to do so I'll keep this post short. Thanks again Seattle. Yall are AWESOME.

Emerald City Commission update

Dusty from GI Joe

Solomon Grundy
Vader commission

My Emerald City Commission Pre-Sale is going strong and I just wanted to send out a reminder that Wednesday is tthe last day to get on the commission list. Peng and I will be signing at the BOOM! Studios booth over the entire weekend so don't miss your chance to get a commission from one or both of us.

Here are the details from my last post:
  • full-body commission (prices are per character) - $100 for color | $50 for black & white
  • waist-up commission (prices are per character) - $50 for color | $25 for black & white
  • what to expect - full-body commissions are drawn on 11x17" smooth bristol | waist-up commissions are drawn on 8.5x11" smooth cardstock | little to no backgrounds (backgrounds are an additional fee - contact me for more info) | my con commissions are colored with copic markers
  • payment - i take Paypal for this only. i do ask for full payment up front instead of at the show. it's absolutely nothing personal. i just want to make sure that if i draw for someone, they really want it.
  • pick-up - you can pick up your finished commission from me as early as the Friday of the show. if you contact me next Wednesday evening with a commission request, then i may have to take your piece to finish after the first day of the show, in which case you can pick it up on Saturday. you can find me at the BOOM Studios booth sketching up  FVZ  covers OR possibly hanging out with Peng-Peng as she draws  sketches on the Adventure Time  side. if you can't pick up your piece for some reason at the show, email me and i'll contact you when i get back home so we can work out details then.
  • want one? email me at jerry@identitycomics.com!

  • What are you waiting for? Give me a shout!

Emerald City Pre Con Comission List

PRE-CON COMMISSION LIST FOR EMERALD CITY!
Commission joint

Another Commission joint
here's something new!  Peng-Peng and i will be attending Emerald City Comic Con for the first time ever at the end of the month! We are both all the way boosted. BOOM! Studios, the great folks that bring you Fanboys Vs Zombies and Adventure Time comics, are having us come all the way to Seattle, WA to sign stuff and sketch even more stuff all weekend. with our strict schedule at the booth, neither of us will have any time to do any personal commissions at the show. soooo, we've decided to try a pre-convention commission list starting now until next Wednesday, Feb. 27th. if you want to get a commission from me, get on my list now and you can pick up your piece from me at the show! interested? here are details.
  • want one? email me at jerry@identitycomics.com!
again, i will NOT be able to draw any personal commissions at the show and the likelihood of drawing one at the end of the day is slim. we are at the mercy of BOOM - what they say, goes! so if you want a commission from me, now's the time. =)

SPREAD THE WORD AND TELL UR FRIENDS!

Design stuff

One of the best things about working on Fanboys vs Zombies is the freedom I'm given in terms of character design. With each arc so far there has been an opportunity to make some changes to each characters look.  I know it helps keep the book fun to draw, and hopefully fans of the book enjoy the change of pace too.

SO today I just wanted to share some of the sketches I've done to get ready to jump into a new story arc.
Enjoy!

Amanda is the very first character I got to create from scratch. She is also my favorite character in the book

This character is the bad guy from the second arc. He got his name changed to Gunther in the book.
I was really excited when I got the chance to design Brendan. He is one of the most fun characters to draw. On a side note I modled him after Super Star artist and super cool guy Khary Randolph

Now in color!

Concepts for Drake as a ghostly spirit
My very first attempts at redesigning Burger and Rob. Initially I really wanted them to look like bad ass zombie killers. I also wanted to push the idea that Rob is really into Star Wars in a visual sense.

This is more or less what we ended up going with. scaled back, but still very tough and more easily recognizable as the guys from the first arc

My idea for these designs for the cast going into the second arc was that it's been a month or so since we last saw our guys and they have really adapted to the situation. and being Fanboys and girls they are really embracing the badass post apocalypse idea

for the third arc I wanted to reach back and kinda let each characters personality show through there cloths. kinda like this is who they really are kinda thing
