Vs Zombies and Cons

Work has been pretty much non stop for the last 3 weeks or so. It's been great to have so much going on and so many cons to hit up. so far I think me and the ID Crew have done about 12 cons and we just added 2 more. The WV POP CON, Morgantown, WVOctober 6-7, 2012 that me and my team will be guesting at (the show really looks like it's gonna be a blast and I can't wait!). We also just added the
Annapolis Comic-Con | Annapolis, MD, October 27, 2012 another home town show. I can't get enough of the local shows. It's really great to hang out and talk shop with my peeps from around the way.

Speaking of cons (u gotta love that segway right?!) the Baltimore con was totally off the hook. Me and the crew had the best show we have ever had. Huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to pick up a comic, print, or commission. You guys all rock. I also got to hang out at the BOOM! Studios booth and meet Ross Richie for the first time and sign some con exclusive versions of FANBOYS VS ZOMBIES #1.

All the while Pennie, Flash and I battled to get the latest issue of FVZ out on time. It was a battle of epic proportions, but we made it and I think this issue tops em all so far. Flash and I actually split up the art chores this issue and he rocked out some classic stuff. prepare to get your shoes knocked off.

And last but not least  the love of my life (PENG) got me some brand new kicks fresh from Krypton to keep me extra fly at this years remaining cons. Yup, I'm a lucky guy. She also found it in her heart to indulge my love of TMNT and got me a set of the figures based on the new animated series. They are lean green fighting machines! Yes, I know I'm a nerd.

Signing at Big Planet Comics May 26th

I'll be signing Fanboys Vs Zombies at Big Planet Comics!

Come and see me and Peng this weekend May 26th at Big Planet Comics in College Park, MD this weekend. We draw a supercool book from Boom! Studios called Fanboys Vs Zombies written by Sam Humphries.  Peng and I Will be signing from 1-3pm and I'll have some prints and original art for sale too. Come spend your Saturday at a comic shop and chat it up about zombies and whatever else comes to mind. It's gonna be crazy so come on out.

Free Comic Book Day!

I'll be at Third Eye Comics in Annapolis May5th!

So today is clearly Avengers day and sadly I won't be able to squeeze in a trip to the theater to watch good bash in evil's face until sometime next week. Until then I will just have to be jealous of all u out there who have already seen it.

I have been doing my best to keep busy this year so I've been working on another project with an extremely talented writer and all around cool guy Andrew Maxwell. The book is called "DOC". It's all about a doctor who seems to have left her normal life to provide medical services to the super villain underworld. It is a really fun read and for some reason I really dig the art ;) Enjoy this sneak peak and I'll keep yall updated on the project.

Back to the Grind

where the magic happens!

I spent all day yesterday in the waiting room at the doctor's office so I wasn't able to get any work done. The good news is that I figured that would happen so I planned ahead and didn't have any major deadlines or meetings planned. Now I'm back at work and ready to rock.

I haven't been in my new place for too long so Peng and I are still getting the place in order. We haven't put up any art yet, but it's slowly coming together. The photo above is my current work space.

And this last pick is the Christmas gift I got for Peng. It is of her character Lali from "The Brotherhood of Fighters" book that the ID studio is working on. I found the artist on DA her name is misscoffee if you get the chance please check her out. she does AMAZING work as you can see.

How to Draw Like the Franchize!

Today I'm starting a brand new part of my site. The "How to" section. Every second Tuesday of the month I'll be posting a new "How to" piece to share a little of what I know about drawing dramatic figures.

I figured that my first drawing should be of Superman cuz he is really fun for me to draw and I am most familiar with his look. Plus the tights make it easy to get the anatomy. Today's tools are photoshop CS5 and my wacom tablet. To begin I start with a blank layer and quickly rough in the gesture. This is really the most important stage. If you want to have a dynamic figure it all starts here. The best way to learn to make dynamic poses is to go out and study your favorite artists work and try to figure out how to create a quick gesture based on their art. it will take you a long way in trying to understand the figure in motion.

Squiggley Lines!

Next is the part that I like most... SQUIGGLEY LINES! This is where I find the right pieces of the puzzle and start to fill out my sketch. I really like to push proportion so here you can see that Superman's head is pretty small compared to his chest. I have similarly exaggerated his legs and arms. I have also decided to really play with foreshortening his arms to give the figure a sense of depth. A lot of artist have trouble with this at first, but it gets easier with practice. The trick is if something is close to you its big and if it's far away it's small. I take that a step further and say that if something is close it should be REALLY BIG and if it's far away then it's REALLY SMALL.

Here I really get into his anatomy and defining his costume. I wouldn't necessarily encourage anyone to study the way I draw anatomy because my style is very exaggerated. I have done quite a bit of study and really put a lot of thought into how I push and pull muscle groups to get what I want.

Last I go over everything and clean up the line work. I only keep the lines I like and get rid of the rest. Because I'm working in photoshop each step is on a different layer so I don't have to worry about erasing anything.  Next month COLORS!

I posted this on my deviant page back on Earth Day, but I figured why not share the love here too? I loved Captain Planet as a kid and I always thought he would be a great comic to read. This is what I would do if I was ever offered the project. Bad guys and polluters watch out!
